W hether you are a beginner or have been ripping for years, Tamarindo and its surrounding areas are famous for its beautiful, fun, rideable waves. From our door, we can simply guide you to 7 outstanding surf breaks or if you need help getting started, we can provide you with lessons, a surfboard and a rash guard for that very first ride! To start your surfing adventure, all you’ll need is basic swimming knowledge and a good sense of humor. Our instructors, who stay with you for 1 ½ - 2 hours, are all professional, and know water safety. We guarantee you will be standing up and riding your first wave in just one lesson! In addition, since this is a world-class surfing area, we know that surf tourists from the world over come to check us out. Therefore, we offer the more advanced surfer guided trips to some of the other surf spots around, or, if desired, lessons for intricate tricks. Of course, if you just want to rent a board and go off on your own, that’s okay too!

Here is a brief rundown of the 7 surf breaks available from the Tamarindo Diria:
Tamarindo Beach
Often called the beginners’ beach because of all the surf lessons that take place here, there’s also a favorite spot for locals at Pico Pequeño a rocky point in front of Tamarindo Diria Beach & Golf Resort. Also check out the Tamarindo River mouth for its rights on the south side and lefts on the north.
Playa Grande
Across the Tamarindo River mouth, about 25 minutes is the best close-to-shore A-frame tubes on mid-tide.
Langosta
Just south of Tamarindo is a right and left point break that curls off the mouth of a small river.
Avellanas
A great selection of breaks here, from the reef at the parking lot, to the good beach breaks all the way to the roaring river mouth and Little Hawaii north. Lots of rights and lefts everywhere and it can get hollow with swell.
Playa Negra
A right point break with very fast waves and one of the best breaks in the country
Witch’s Rock
For the veteran surfer, one of the most famous breaks in Costa Rica. Charter a boat from Playas del Coco and experience the fast hollow, long rights and lefts at incoming high tide.
Ollie’s Point
A good complimentary break to take on your boat trip with Witch’s Rock, since it works well at mid- to low tide. Excellent, fast hollow right point break made famous in the film “Endless Summer II.”
