T hroughout the local rivers, the mangrove trees play an important direct and indirect role in maintaining the fish stock with their long roots and branches becoming a vital habitat of many species of birds, mammals and reptiles. In the Tamarindo estuary, there are 5 types of mangroves—among them Red Rhizohora, White Languncuria and Black Avicennia—providing a spawning site for fish and drawing a plethora of birds, many of them seasonal migrants from North America.
