Closer look at the meaning & origins of: Tamarindo Diria Beach & Golf Resort

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Our visitors often wonder about the origin and meaning of Tamarindo Diria Beach & Golf Resort. So let’s take a closer look at the words composing our name.

Why Tamarindo?

Tamarindo refers to our lovely town in the dry province of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. 50 years ago Tamarindo was a tiny village, where the few inhabitants mostly lived on their fishing. When the Tamarindo Diria project started around 40 years ago, an unpaved bumpy dirt road was the only way to get to Tamarindo by land. The first cabins of the Tamarindo Diria soon transformed the village that quickly grew around and with the Resort. Today you will find everything you need in Tamarindo, from entertainment & restaurants up to banks & pharmacies.

Tamarindo also stands for the tropical tree Tamarind, which was introduced in central and south America by the Spanish and Portuguese colonists during the 16th century. The long living tree is vase shaped with ever green leaves and grows well in full sun, so it adapted perfectly to our coasts. From the fruits, which are sweet and acid at the same time you will get delicious juices, marmalade, sauces etc.

Why Diria?

The natives that were living in Guanacaste before the arrival of the Spanish colonists belonged to the Chorotega tribe. Their society was partly democratic and they had to some extend a separation of powers. Diria was the name of a Cacique (political chief) that fought against the Spanish Invasion. More information about Diria in our blog ”Cacique Diria”. Our guests will find representations and statues of Diria all over the Resort grounds. While focusing on giving the best service and meet the needs of our guests we are careful not to forget our pre-hispanic culture.

Why Beach?

Simply because we are the only Resort in Tamarindo that is located directly on the beach! In addition to that the favorable weather conditions and temperatures ensure that you will be able to swim in the pacific ocean all throughout the year. In our lush ocean front gardens, our guests may relax in one of our beach chairs while sipping a refreshing drink from the bar.

Why Golf?

During the past couple of years there has been an increasing interest and development of golf courses in Costa Rica. For now we have a driving range just 5 min from our Resort and offer advantageous rates to the two world class golf courses which are just a 25 min drive away from the Tamarindo Diria Beach & Golf Resort.

Why Resort?

The Tamarindo Diria Beach & Golf Resort is not simply a hotel. Our lush tropical garden and our pools are perfect for our guests that want to relax while hearing the waves gently break on the golden beach. Our Matapalo Restaurant and Media Luna Bar offer a unique view to the ocean and are perfectly located for those who want to enjoy the stunning sunsets of Playa Tamarindo. We also offer various daily activities with our professional trainer and our Tour Desk has a wide choice of tours and massages.

Jim Morris Concert Series at Tamarindo Amphitheater

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Jim Morris a verbose singer/songwriter with a style reminiscent of Jimmy Buffet will be here in Playa Tamarindo April 30-May 6, 2011. The concert series will include shows both at the amphitheater and kicked back by the pool, as well as dinner & show combo’s at the Tropical Garden Pool and Restaurante Matapalo.

Jim Morris has released one album every year since his  first recording, “Laid Back and Key Wasted,” released in 1996 by Fish Head Music. One of Jim’s more popular albums, “Bocanuts,” was released in 1997 and exposed a formula that Jim was really very proud of: “some tropical, some jazz, some country, some acoustic folk, and some humor. It certainly reflects my musical tastes,” Morris admits.

Jim is now directing his efforts to expanding his fan base and touring with the Big Bamboo Band. He will still make time to fish and will always be on the lookout for song material.

We very much look forward to having Jim and many of his traveling fans at the resort and hope that everyone will come and enjoy!

Surf Now! Work Later!

Monday, January 24th, 2011

February is for lovers…surf lovers, that is. According to crsurf.com and numerous surf enthusiasts in the Playa Tamarindo area, February 2011 is going to be a difficult month to get any work done. Waves during high tide are predicted to be a consistent 7 to 13 feet for the entire month! February and March are ranked at a 9 out of 10 on the awesome Costa Rica Surf Scale. This ranking is based on just general wind conditions, swell direction, and wave size.

Right behind the Hotel Tamarindo Diria the beach is thinner and there are a string of rocks that go out about 150 yards. Depending on the swell size and tide, a wave breaks off both sides of the rocks, producing lefts that go for about 200 meters or longer and rights about 150 meters. This surf spot is known as, ‘Pico Pequeno.‘ Watch out for rocks at lower tides and beginners at high tides. This spot is also localized, so respect the order in the lineup. Breaks best at head high to 2 feet overhead.
