Surf Now! Work Later!

Monday, January 24th, 2011

February is for lovers…surf lovers, that is. According to crsurf.com and numerous surf enthusiasts in the Playa Tamarindo area, February 2011 is going to be a difficult month to get any work done. Waves during high tide are predicted to be a consistent 7 to 13 feet for the entire month! February and March are ranked at a 9 out of 10 on the awesome Costa Rica Surf Scale. This ranking is based on just general wind conditions, swell direction, and wave size.

Right behind the Hotel Tamarindo Diria the beach is thinner and there are a string of rocks that go out about 150 yards. Depending on the swell size and tide, a wave breaks off both sides of the rocks, producing lefts that go for about 200 meters or longer and rights about 150 meters. This surf spot is known as, ‘Pico Pequeno.‘ Watch out for rocks at lower tides and beginners at high tides. This spot is also localized, so respect the order in the lineup. Breaks best at head high to 2 feet overhead.

Tamarindo Improvements

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

The new year has begun and Hotel Tamarindo Diria Beach & Golf Resort is more ready than ever. After a very busy holiday season Grupo Diria and Playa Tamarindo are looking forward to some major changes for 2011.

A major renovation of the commercial center across the street from the hotel is near completion and looking great! The center plans to include a very modern convention center, sports bar, casino, and novelty shops. The architecture is to compliment the Diria Shops in the commercial center where Coco Spa and Cafeteria Nari reside which were renovated by Grupo Diria in early 2007. Guido Alfaro, Operations Manager of Hotel Tamarindo Diria Beach & Golf Resort, reports on the renovation, “The resort and surrounding businesses are located in a heavily trafficked area and it is important to us, as Tamarindo residents and business owners, that we put our best face forward.”

Speaking of heavy traffic, Hotel Tamarindo Diria can be thanked for MOPT (Ministero de Obras Publicas y Transportes) finally coming out to mark our roads. The markings on the roads will hopefully enforce parking guidelines and help alleviate some of the traffic which can become incredibly congested in this area. Another solution to traffic build up in this area will be the new parking spaces in front of the commercial center and the parking lot on the corner across the street from Century 21. The hopes behind these changes is that the downtown Tamarindo area can proudly put its best face forward while maintaining that small town feel. Surely both locals and tourists will enjoy a less congested beach town.

As for changes at the resort, $500,000 has been invested in upgrading all Sunset Ocean View rooms. Each room has an ideal view of the beach coupled with an exquisite nightly performance we like to call sunset. The rooms have been completely refurbished, including: new & larger mattresses, linens, paint, flat screen televisions, and high speed internet connection.

Free Wi-Fi

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Ask and you shall receive! Hotel Tamarindo Diria Beach & Golf Resort is now offering free wi-fi to all guests. The free internet connection is accessible in all common areas of the resort (on the beach side) including pool, restaurants, and front lobby areas. The newly redone Sunset Ocean View rooms are also now equipped with free wireless internet.

Once you’ve had your daily does of Tamarindo adventure then find yourself a cozy spot and surf the web instead.

Surf Haven: Tamarindo Beach

Monday, January 3rd, 2011
Tamarindo, Costa Rica is the most popular beach destination for traveling surfers in the Guanacaste Province of Costa Rica.  There are over 20 surf spots within driving distance of Tamarindo, making it an excellent location for your surf trip to Costa Rica.
The waves here are perfect size due to Punta San Francisco which usually shields Tamarindo, Costa Rica from the predominant southern swell window. That being said, the waves in Tamarindo are perfect for beginner surfers of all ages.  Our beginner friendly waves has made Tamarindo the epicenter for learning to surf.
For experienced surfers, there are several reefs in Tamarindo that come alive during large west/northwest swells creating hollow powerful rights that break over shallow volcanic reef. There are also very decent surf breaks along the way to Playa Langosta.
Another option for intermediate and advanced surfers is to use Tamarindo as a home base to explore the surrounding breaks, such as, Playa Grande, Playa Avellanas, Playa Negra, Playa Junquillal, Marbella, Witch’s Rock and Ollies Point. All of these breaks are within driving distance which makes Hotel Tamarindo Diria Beach & Golf Resort a great location to explore for surf.
If you would like more information on surfing in and around Tamarindo, Costa Rica, feel free to contact us anytime. Our tour desk has all the resources you need to plan your perfect beginner or intermediate surf adventure vacation.

Air Travel to Tamarindo

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010
It is now easier than ever to make your way to the beautiful beach town of Tamarindo. Not only is Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia less than one hour away it is now offering non stop flights from the US, Canada, and Europe.

The Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport(LIR) was built in 1995, and was designed to service Costa Rica’s northwest (Pacific) coast. Quick popularity and a growing number of daily arrivals have made an expansion necessary, prompting airport officials and managers to begin soliciting investments. The airport has been approved for an expansion project for a $35 million terminal which will be able to handle 1,500 passengers simultaneously.

For this new year 2011, the number of visitors are expected to double to more than 180,000. Weekly flights at LIR are expected to go from 13 to 34, starting this month. The increase in the number of flights is the result of the opening of a new route by Grupo Taca between San Jose and Liberia, another one by Air Canada from Toronto, and a third option by U.S. Airways, which will start in February 2011. The airport is also extending its operating hours from 6 am to 8 pm, with the possibility of closing at 10 pm for any delayed flights.

Currently there are 15 airlines operating out of LIR; 11 nonstop flights per week; and LIR connects with 11 cities nonstop. For one stop airfare shopping check out: Kayak.com.

Once you have made it to Liberia, Costa Rica you are only an hour away from your vacation destination, Hotel Tamarindo Diria Beach & Golf Resort. As a service to our distinguished guests we can arrange a Transfer for you from the Airport to the resort in a private, air conditioned vehicle that will take up to 8 people. Should you decided to drive on your own check out the directions on our website.

If you choose to fly into San Jose at the Juan Santamaria Airport we would be happy to arrange a 35 minute flight for you from San Jose to Tamarindo Airport on one of our national airlines, either Sansa Airlines or Nature Air.

Special feature at the Diria Amphitheater: Snow White & the 7 Dwarfs

Sunday, December 5th, 2010

Beach Nuts Theater Co. & Amigos De La Educacion present Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs at Hotel Tamarindo Diria Beach & Golf Resort Amphitheater. The very anticipated opening night is right around the corner and my family and I can’t wait!

There is so much buzz around town about the performers, costumes, and set; it’s going to be quite the show! We would expect nothing but spectacular from Director, Paul Belanger, who is a noted actor and director from Canada. Paul also directed Peter Pan and Cinderella both of which had a very positive community response.

Snow White is  going to be a local explosion of exquisite costumes by Kata Kiss, fanciful sets created by Lydia Beech, creative choreography by Christi Lalonde, and groovy tunes from Tamarindo Music Studio. Locals from every arena are involved in this production making it a real community event.

Caralee Burton, mother of three and resident of Portrero is thrilled with the theater group. Caralee divulges  “I was so pleased to come across a program like this…something that my 5 and 7 year old can participate in…of course, surf and sun is great, but what I really want is for them to gain the skills that a program like this can offer, such as group work, collaboration, patience, imagination, and community support.”

According to Americansforthearts.com, “Increasingly, ‘controlled’ studies reveal a powerful, positive relationship between study in the arts and other academic subjects, attitudes, and behaviors.Dramatic play appears to increase tendencies of early elementary school children to be thorough and explicit in their conveying of stories critical to success in school settings where these skills are required in written and oral language activities.” Nothing but good can come from this increasingly popular theater group. Good for kids. Good for community. Good for Tamarindo.

Our community has actively responded to this relatively new theater group growing from 10 members to 50 in just 3 productions. The theater group brings people of all ages together from multiple areas, including Tamarindo, Flamingo, Portrero, and Brasilito. During their months of play rehearsals Paul has watched “children work together and support one another.” Paul says, “Every time I direct a play I get to see people who are excited about being involved. The idea is that community theater is alive and well in Tamarindo and the goal is to keep it going for a long time.” The huge turn out at past performances is a great indicator that this theater group is here to stay.

Rumor has it that this production of Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs is interactive, so don’t get too cozy! If you are in the audience then you are in the show. Get ready to “boo” and “hooray” your way to a fun filled evening not soon to be forgotten.
