Descriptions

The basilisco is one of the small and prettier lizards that live in Costa Rica, they are of green emerald color, but really they are not pure green emerald color, the skin is cover by points navy blue throughout the body and they are characterized to have crests in the head, trunk and in the tail these crests are maintained by bony projections of the skull and vertebras.

It is a Oviparous species, the females reach the maturity to the 18 months and deposit of 2 to 12 eggs several times to the year.

They measure between 60 cm in length and a meter, of which the tail occupies the two third parts, they weigh in average about 600 kilograms.

The Females are of so large minor, the crest is very reduced and single it covers the head, in bulk are half of the males. These small lizards are called Small lizards Jesus Christ since it has a capacity to be able to walk some meters on the surface of the water, this thanks to you fold that it has in its later legs which make resistance to the water and they allow by a few meters to support the weight of the small lizard.

Feeding

Eats an ample variety of invertebrates, mainly insects. The youthful ones (until a year) have a totally carnivorous diet, whereas the adults include in their diet some seeds, flowers and fruits. Also, the adults depredate small vertebrates including other small lizards, snakes, birds and mammals.

Distribution

It is possible to be found from Honduras to the west of Panama. In Costa Rica they are distributed in low territories of the South region of the pacific slope and throughout low territories of the Atlantic slope.
