Descriptions
The male is about 47 cm and weights 500 grams on average, females are usually smaller, 44 cm and 380 grams. It's a large bird, the body is black, the legs are grey-blue, it has a green - yellowish ring with a red bottom trim in the upper chest and neck, it has a turquoise ring around the eyes. The beak is the most distinctive part of this bird and what makes it one of the most beautiful ones of Costa Rica. The beak is light because it is hollow, it is also wax-like and has an orange stripe with vertical shadows that simulate teeth. The tip is dark red and the rest is green-yellow.
Feeding
They eat fruit, seeds, insects and occasionally reptiles. They also eat eggs from other birds' nests.
Distribution
They can be seen from Mexico to the Northern part of Colombia. In Costa Rica it lives in the forests close to the Caribbean coast and in places not higher than 1.200 meters above sea level. They can also be found in the pacific coast but is a bit uncommon.
